Cedar Hope Chests and the Elements

This Cedar Hope Chest, made from wood, is insect and water resistant. Cedar wood is a durable hardwood known to repel moths. Natural oils found in this wood gives off a strong smell that is pleasing to humans, but not to moths. The natural oils is also what makes cedar resistant to water and decay. This makes cedar chests perfect for storing mementos and other items.

History

Hope chests, also known as wedding or dower chests, have been in use since as early as the 15th century. They were usually gifted to young girls to fill with quilts and other handmade items. These items are then stored in the chest until she married when she needed them for her new life. Nowadays, you can use these storage chests to store valuables and keepsakes. You can even store these items to pass down to loved ones.

Cleaning Cedar Chests

Clean with furniture polish and a rag every two weeks. Always wipe towards the direction of the grain. Use Cedar chest oil or cedar blocks to revamp the cedar smell. The smell can last anywhere from 1-3 years.
